Brookhouse: American Sounds | NPR Tiny Desk Contest 2026

Brookhouse - El Baile del Dictador
Don't get comfortable

Brookhouse is a singer-songwriter, guitarist, and cultural chameleon mixing rock, jazz, folk, and Latin music into a distinctly "American" sound--in the broadest possible sense.
As a Cuban-American born in Virginia, Brookhouse is the quintessential third-culture kid: straddling cultural divides, never fitting a label neatly, and developing some seriously eclectic taste in music. All of his experiences come out in songs that are hard to fit into one category: danceable protest songs, contemplative confessions, and carefree celebrations all have their moments.
With his rotating cast of band members, every live show has different instrumentation and personalities, making every performance unique.
Taken all together, this has prompted comparisons to artists from all corners of the world - soulful vocals like Hozier and Jeff Buckley, guitar like Khruangbin and Santana, with a side of the improvisational energy of King Gizzard and Dave Matthews.
Despite this variety, there is a common thread: the message that we all contain multitudes, and embracing that in yourself will set you free.
